I learned a long time ago, if the stator plate has something other than the simple yellow wire and white wire…..I immediately swap out the stator plate. For less than $20 on Amazon, you can pick up a stator with yellow and white wires and all your woes are gone.

I have the yellow from the stator going to the red in the factory harness

How about the yellow from the stator?? That is supposed to be T'd into the wires you just described.
