Depends on the races you enter. Some don't allow 12 inch rims while others do. Check the rules on the races you feel like going to.

yep cycle rider is exactly right 
Front end isn't as twitchy ( more stable ) .
Also lessens the jaring effects of ruts and rocks when you roll over them... noticeably.
