Anyone here own an MB5?

I recently picked up a 900 mile original bike that had sat for many years, Red, runs very decent but has some issues like any other 25 year old bike would....

I am interested to know what parts may be interchangeable with other models, like the headlight trim ring on mine is cruddy etc.

The engine bore/stroke seems identical to the old MR50's. I know that pistons are impossible to find for those bikes. Since the MB is a reed engine rather than piston port, are pistons available? Maybe easier to find from Euro MB50's?

The small pinhole leaks in the gas tank have been a nightmare to fix.....the chances of finding a red tank will be nearly impossible....

I have a brand new NOS left clamshell and clutch perch for that bike. If you want this, hit me up as I'll give a good deal on it. I took the black lever and had it polished, but everything else is NOS and obsolete from Honda. All new wiring, it's a nice piece.

Z - Thanks for the gracious offer. I don't have a need for that particular piece but appreciate your willingness to help me out!

Re: Anyone here own an MB5?

Don't think impossible. I had one of those bikes for many years. I can get you performance pieces from Malossi if you would like for it. Many pieces are interchangable but the bike are all in japan and europe. 50cc.eu Onderdelen, scooters, bromfietsen, Parts, scooters and mopeds is also a good place to get parts and they will gladly ship to the US. Also tanks seem to appear on Ebay alot so just keep your eyes open. I also have a contact for lots of parts if your interested. He has a barn full of them.

POR tank restorer works great!
What are the piston measurements? I'd bet there's something usable out there. I have a JT1, and with some looking found a modern replacement.

Re: Anyone here own an MB5?

To Pierce and Firepower, thanks for the info/reply.

The tank was Kreemed by some genius in the past and was a bad job. It still seeps through in spots. I swear by the Por-15...have used it with great success.
I do not believe I need a bore or piston yet, just seeing what was available.

I have heard the Malossi kits are the way to go. Around $150 for cylinder, piston/rings and wrist pin. Sounds like the best set up.

I will try and post a few pictures later this week and point out the weak spots on parts that I need....Thanks!

Re: Anyone here own an MB5?

I just joined this forum and thought I'd respond to this quite old thread!

I've owned my '82 MB5 since the late 90s. Has a little over 4000 miles on it now, but still looks just about the same as in this pic. Stock except for one more tooth on the countershaft sprocket, and a gel cell battery now going on it's 5th year and still working fine. Also have a little tank bag on it now. Did a top end on it when I got it at about 2600 miles, but it looked like it didn't even need it once I got it apart. Put some NOS fenders on it, front and rear. I've riden the "50cc True Grits fun run" with my MB twice, and hope to make it again this year after missing it the last 4 years or so. Plenty of 50cc bikes there of all types. I've also ran the parade lap at "Mid Ohio" sports car course with the MB5 which was a blast. Pretty cool to pass the Goldwings on the curves...

Any other folks into 50cc "street bikes" in the middle TN area?

Glad to add to this thread with my black MB5

(I also have a highly modded stroker SL125 (150) that I have raced in the classic 125 class, and also still have my first bike a '73 Honda XR75. Well first "real bike", the old Rupp doesn't count does it?)

Re: Anyone here own an MB5?

^^^^^ I had that exact bike back in 1985. It was my first..., no-- second street bike if you count a Honda PA50 moped as a street bike. I had a ball riding that thing all around my city back then. Last I remember, parts weren't discontinued for it from the dealer.

You can make a sandwich waiting for it to come on the pipe, then eat it once it's in the power curve. When you're 16, it's kind of a cool bike I guess. My friend had this Kawasaki AR80. Now that bike was cool. I don't think I've ever seen another one in person. Anyone have one? Gotta be mega collectable. If I ever see one for a good price, I'd like to grab it.

What somebody needs to do, is make a bike like the MB5 again, only with say... a 100/150cc air cooled 4 stroke engine. Something like the CBR125 in Canada. It needs to be way cheap too-- like in the $2000 or less range. The problem is that you can grab up something like a late '70's Honda CM400 Hawk for about $800 in nice shape, or better yet-- a Yamaha Radian for $1200. --L*64

Collectable? now they are. At one all Japanese vintage meet I attend, you couldn't give one away 5 years ago. Now they want big money. You never can tell sometime what will become "valuable". Pretty cool little scoot.
