Missing Key

Hi everyone, just came across your site.

This week I was given a ZB from my fiance's father. It had been sitting in his backyard for the last couple of years so I picked it up and am looking to get it running for her to ride. The bike is all there but he hasn't been able to find the key for it. I could probably bypass the ignition but I'd rather not start modifying things as I realize how rare the ZB's are. What is the best way to go about getting a key for the bike so I can try and get it running?

Thanks,
Matt

Service honda (219 932 2891) has a new oem lock set;gas cap, steering stem lock, helmut lock, and complete ignition w two keys for around 120 bucks. Seems like a good purchase for your situation

Re: Missing Key

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I came across a thread where someone mentioned buying a new matching set. I'd like to keep the original keyset if possible. I was hoping that I would be able to pull some sort of code off of the ignition and have some OEM keys made.

Or you can take the ign off and go to a locksmith and he will make you a key....

Re: Missing Key

No, locksmiths copy keys, not locks.
Maybe honda can create a new key using your VIN. (I do not know if this works for older bikes)

Sorry my friend, but you are wrong... Any skilled locksmith can copy the size and pattern of the pins inside the tumbler, and make the appropriate key so the rest of the keys will work.

This also the best bet, and most economical for the starter of this thread!

Re: Missing Key

I had a locksmith pick the gas cap and use the number on the bottom to make a key. He had a computer program that tells him exactly where to cut. I believe that same key code is on the bottom of moost ignition switches on older bikes including the ZB. Works like a charm!

Interesting, good info..... I have a ZB igniton cylinder with no key. Would save me lots of $$ over buying a lock set from Honda.

Re: Missing Key

hondakeys.com is the way to go if you get stuck finding an affordable locksmith. It takes a few e-mails to get the guy to answer sometimes but he did have keys for my CB750 and CB350.

Re: Missing Key

Go to your local motorcycle shop, buy a new keyswitch with a key cut the old key switch out, wire up the new one to it and there ya go... It should work with about any stwitch as long as they have the same wireing configuration.

Re: Missing Key

The bike has 4 wires on the ignition so I'm not sure which ones you have to jump.

Mark at Hondakeys is trying to help me out. He doesn't have the original but he has one that he thinks will work.

On another not, I managed to break the cast aluminum part of the wheel lock that holds the barrels. Mark doesn't have one so I was wondering if anyone might know of another resource. I'm sure its common to a number of bikes, just a matter of finding which ones. I can post pics if that might help. Thanks guys, I appreciate all of your input.

Re: Missing Key

On the backside of the helmet lock and steering lock and on the side of the ignition switch is a code. It will be the last three. A letter followed by 2 digits ex: C47...Take that to your local dealer. Most shops have a key cutter with a decode book. They can cut you a key for about $5.00 . Bring proof of ownership just in case (they should ask)...If no luck hit me up.
