Max sustainable speed: 85, 88, 95cc?

Well, it seems no one has the bank for my ST90 and it is such a shame to have it sit here in the garage.

So, I am going to take the 153cc Jialing motor out of it and pop one in of standard configuration (with a 49cc stamped cylinder). This way it can be used as a scooter in VA without tagging it.

So, this bike is pretty light and its been a good while since we've talked about the smaller motors.

What do you think is a good cruising speed to aim for with the following motor sizes? Also, maybe some help with gearing to achieve this?

70cc
88cc
95cc
108cc (stroker)

My guesses?
70cc - 40
88cc - 45
95cc - 50
108cc - 55 (stroker)

I think a stock 70cc engine would be more comfortable in the 35 range, you might get 40 but the tall gearing might make it not so fun to get going.

Re: Max sustainable speed: 85, 88, 95cc?

i got a c70 with just a pod filter and a homade pipe that really flows (i grinded off the 72ccs so i dont have to worry about tags here in CT either. On the flats with my skinny ass on it (130lbs) i get 40 all the time down hill i tach the speedo out at 55. Keep in mind the larger wheels prolly help out alot for my speeds. It is a 3 speed n up hills i get 30-35 depending on steep it is.

What tranny would you plan on useing the stock 3 speed?

Tagless bikes are where its at right now. 60+mpg with gas at 4 bucks i ride it everywhere

Id stick with the 88cc mark. That way you dont burn up to much fuel.

My 1968 Honda CT90 maintained 57 mph GPS confirmed. I have a stock exhaust, but a tweeked carb and points setup.

Re: Max sustainable speed: 85, 88, 95cc?

Well, what I am going for here is what type of speed should i expect without the worry of the motor coming apart. Certainly I can't run a motor like this at 10k for 30 minutes straight. So, it is ok to expect to run it at 7k? Could I go 55-60 mph at 7k on a 108cc motor in this bike or is it more reasonable to go 45-50?

Top speed not really a concern...max sustainable where we don't have to worry about the motor coming apart is what I'm after.

Exactly, that is my train of thought behind my other response. 7 thousand rpm would be a good cruising speed I think. If I was to build a street bike I would definetly go for the stroker crank so I could run the tall gear but still have some get up and go. With the 108 I think you could get 50+ mph without too many r's.

do they really look at the cc's on the engine?

in VA you don't require title/reg for a scooter. in VA it is 49cc that qualifies as a scooter that doesn't need reg/title/license...or inspection.

here in ny you have to register and inspect and insure it if its over like 25mph i think
but you can drive it with a permit i think.
