1980 XR80 Upgrades

I have been rebuilding a XR80 last summer and now its finally done. I love the bike!! I was looking for any upgrades for the bike that will fit without any problems. Suspension, exhaust, carb, tires, brakes, anything. But all bolt ons. I dont want to modify the bike.

Thanks

Powroll sells a few trick engine mods and exhaust systems. You can also get an inner roter kit for the xr's (can't remember who sells them but do a google search). The forks can be swapped out with larger forks from larger xr's. The rear shocks can be replaced with longer shocks etc. Not really a whole lot you can do compared to newer bikes - but the powroll stuff is first class.

I dont want to modify by cutting, relocating, ect. Direct bolt ons. I was not saying keeping it stock with modifying it.

He's right, you can use the period XR100 swinger which is longer, the 100 front end and shocks too. It looks pretty good with the smaller XR80 wheels. I'm pretty sure that a modern 80/100 front end bolts up. I was into that project a while ago-- but scrapped it as it made more sense to fool with modern stuff. --L*64

Re: 1980 XR80 Upgrades

Vintage XR's have a ton of options! And character that the CRF50 and it's clones will never have

PIT SHOP

80 inner rotors aren't available, but I know a guy who mods cheap 50 ones for the 80 Just lightening the flywheel makes them snappier though. A CDI swap is a nice upgrade, and a rewound stator for night rides or street legality is too. They don't have a turd of a clutch on the end of the crank, and with the 5 speed, rip pretty good.

There are a few oddities to building one, but it can be done. My 118cc XR80 gets around pretty good. The funky piston height screws with easy big bores. Powroll 95cc is pricey, but the easiest. EO 118cc is stupid expensive. I've swapped on a longer rod while the 80 crank's getting the sling cleaned. Also the shorter 75 jug and cam chain can be used. Either way, you can then use a commonly available piston. The stock jug can be sleeved for a real big kit using a KLX110 BBK piston, 100 crank will go in, with other mods, allowing cheap bolt-on 115 kits. Head's lame, but it can make fun power.

Shocks are widely available, and the late model guys would be saddened to hear, can work every bit as well as their linkless and soul-less monos. Late 80's forks and wheels can give you disk brakes and alloy rims, good legs.

Jeff Ward got around nicely on the little upright XR's

Re: 1980 XR80 Upgrades

Sadly not mine, blatant thievery Mine are rough-ish right now, getting chopped and welded. The last one is a custom 450cc XL350 based British KSI bike with some great history. I'm mini-cloning it with a (BIG) XR75 motor. The pipe dumping straight down behind the motor goes against my stealth-or-death motto, but it will be too cool to pass on.

Re: 1980 XR80 Upgrades

That last bike is beautiful!!! It looks like an '83-'85 RM80 front end on it, and the swinger is a work of art-- reminds me of a YZ60 swinger, or an '81 or '82 YZ80 piece. Who's bike is that?

You guys forget that he said he wanted to just bolt on, and not be cutting anything up. I think Works makes some shocks for the rear of that bike, and a re-sprung newer XR80/100 front would be really good too. An old XR100 swingarm from that time period, modded to accept a modern pitbike chain guide, and nickel plated would be sweet. You would have an awesome looking and performing vintage ride, that would be fun to race against newer pit bikes. If I didn't have a ton of bikes already-- I'd get into that project myself. I'd love the black frame with the nickel plated swinger! --L*64

Last one's a full-size. Simons forks. Richard Tetts KSI Thumper!
My mini-clone is using a YZ60 chassis, as a start. I have a 79 YZ80 arm on my JT1 mono conversion bike

Re: 1980 XR80 Upgrades

Does anybody make stiffer springs for the front and rear shocks? Direct swaps that is.

Re: 1980 XR80 Upgrades

Inner roters or a cdi upgrade are available (bolt on) from Vintage Honda Elsinore CR125/CR250 and MR50 parts | QA50 parts | Z50 parts | CT70 parts | SL70 parts | XL70 parts | XR75 parts | XR80 parts | Seat Foam .
I put the cdi upgrade on my 1978 xr75. It works great and I don't have to mess with those points again!

The hop up kits and suspension kits that were popular year ago are just not available today. If you do find one, its gonna cost ya!

have fun!

Re: 1980 XR80 Upgrades

email the guy at xrsonly he will have something. If not just get a pod filter (you will have to rejet though) and check the OEM section of bikebandit.com for factory parts. Seriously your best bet on help for that bike is thumpertalk in the xrs section. You will find lots of tips and tricks specifically for that bike if you search. Here is the section for the xr80's XR/CRF 80-200 - ThumperTalk
