Steering Heads!!!!!

Has anyone had a problem with keeping the steering heads on the bike tight. Im having a problem with my sdg steering head loosening and crushing the bearings.

Ive already tried loc-tight on stem threads. but still happens!!

Re: Steering Heads!!!!!

Use a sharpie, and mark the top clamp and stem nut so you can see if it's actually backing off, or if you're just rough on stem bearings. Also, make sure you are loosening the upper clamp bolts before you tighten the upper stem nut, that acts as a jam nut to lock the lower stem nut in place. If you don't allow the clamp to slide on the forks before tightening it, you may not be effectively 'jamming' the lower nut in place.

Re: Steering Heads!!!!!

I usually snug the lower stem nut enough to make it somewhat difficult to turn the forks. I then install the top clamp, and then the upper stem nut and snug that down tightly. Then I use a hammer and punch to "back off" the lower stem nut a 1/4 turn, jamming it tightly up into the top clamp. Has always seemed to work for me, with no backing off or loosening up whatsoever.

That makes sense. but as you said its backing off. Ive since lost the whole top tripple nut today. Any ideas on where to get just the top nut???

P.S. Thanks for the replies
