jetting help ok i just bought an 06 xtreme ss88. it will start and idle just fine but when you crack the throttle, it bogs down and will sometimes die. if you roll on the throttle really slow it will rev up. it has a 20mm mikuni carb with a 95 main jet,not sure what size pilot and 1.5 turns on fuel screw. elevation is around 1350 ft. no other mods for now

| Re: jetting help if you want to lean it some without buying anything, turn the air screw out more, and put the needle clip farther up, this causes the needle to be farther down, and less gas being mixed with air. you will probably end up buying another mainjet. easiest way to tell if your running rich is take off the air filter. dont ride it, but see if you get better response. if it pops while decelerating its also an indication that its rich. more gas is being put in and not burned, then it gathers and pops. | Re: jetting help since were on the topic my gpx 160 leaks a little fuel out the air filter after i take it for a spin, it also bogs a lil when i flour it in 3rd then it takes right off, also smells like its running rich, but other than than it seems to run/ idle fine. do i need to adjust my needle? |

Re: jetting help Whighty is spot on with his info .... especially the popping on decel which indicates that there's unburnt fuel from too rich a mixture still burning in the pipe ..... Here's a link that might help ..... read it and bookmark it for future reference : Motorcycle Carburetor Theory 101

Re: jetting help ok finally got to play around with it, the pilot is a 17.5, main is a 95 and needle was on middle clip, 1.5 turns out on the fuel screw. moved needle to top clip and it still bogged down. so i moved needle to very bottom clip and it still has very slight bog but nowhere near what it was. so i am thinking i need a bigger pilot jet and play around with needle setting. sound right?

Re: jetting help Yep, sounds right. Sometimes its hard to tell if too lean or too rich. We put a new carb on my friends sikk, and it was sparkin and whatnot and it turns out it was lean. we moved the needle up some and it runs awesome. So yes, a bigger pilot will help your situation.
