Re: Griffith Observatory mini ride

As expected, Ernesto's bike was awesome in person.
Eddie's CRF50 with the 88 big bore was very clean and dialed in.
Nice bikes, guys.

We went up to the Observatory via Vermont Av. then down Fern Dell Dr. (the twisties). Elevation wise, it wasn't too demanding on the minis. Not as steep like Angeles Crest Highway nor were the cars expecting us to go really fast as they do at ACH. It really only took us 5 minutes to get down to Los Feliz Bl. On the way back from lunch, we went the reverse direction. We followed a Dodge Ram pickup on the way up and funny thing is, I thought it was in our 'way'.

When we got up to the Observatory, all cars had to park down on Fern Dell Dr. and people had to walk 1/4 mile up to the Observatory. We, however, were waved through by the parking attendants through the cones up to the regular parking lot.

We had lunch at Sanamluang Thai Restaurant (good Thai food). We were treated to VIP
'coned off' parking right in front of the restaurant. The rest of parking lot was full.

What I was really surprised about was how much ground we covered in such a short amount of time. When minis are modded, they can hold their own at street traffic speeds. I didn't feel in any situation were we preventing cars from going the speed limit. I think Eddie clocked us on his GPS at 47 mph with a bit more to go. I think we can easily go 50. My Panda has a really short wheel base so it didn't feel as planted as Ernesto's or Eddies CRF50s with longer swingers. Yes, I need a longer swinger. Anyone have for sale a nice +4 or longer swinger for my Panda?

Thanks Sam, and wow for the detailed play by play. If sure was funny how we just happend to end up with VIP parking/treatment everywhere we went. One lady pulled off to the side to let me pass cause she saw I was separated from the pack, lol.

Ernesto's bike was off the hook! And, Sams panda was pretty dam cool as well. I went back for a speed run after you guys left and did hit 50mph.

I'm sure it'll be fine. We weren't WOT throttle all the time. Just crusing mostly around 30mph.

Better get a big bore kit quick. My Panda with a Zongshen 125 was barely able to keep up with Eddie and Ernesto. They were haulin' a$$. I think I topped out at 47ish. Beyond that it was a bit scary due to my short wheelbase and loose head bearing. They just let me be in the front only because I knew where to go. I better get a bigger motor and then bigger wheels/swingarm.

Yeah, we weren't going too fast just cruising and exploring. We even hit a short dirt portion because we didn't want to get onto the Los Feliz Bl. freeway. Next time we should all wear some brighter colors. It was a coincidence that we were all wearing black.

we have to post up on that short twistie section and get some action pictures. i won't be dragging knee but i'll certainly be trying.

caplated... i'm slow as dirt. i can bring out my 88cc bike if it makes you feel better. we all go our own pace and wait for anyone who's in the back.

Re: Griffith Observatory mini ride

The big bore kit is a good idea though, cause at times we need that get up and go power.

Sam, your panda was right there with us. I think Ernesto's bike was the fastest though. We should find a closed off straight away somewhere next time and have a drag race just for some s***s and giggles.

That dirt portion was funny as hell. Me and Ernesto looked at eachother and was like... where the **** is he going, hahahaha...

I took one of those twisties too fast and almost ate it.... gots to get me some gear soon.

Dam all this talking makes me want to go ride!

We'll go on a slightly longer ride next time. I have some more ideas where to go. I saw some gated roads in the park (not sure if we're allowed but we'll try anyway)

I definitely will need everyone to have more protective gear next time as I'll feel really bad if you get hurt. Another thing is if you do get hurt, it'll take a while for help to get to us. Cell reception might be a bit spotty up there.

I almost ate it on that hairpin because it's very different on a motorcycle than when you ride a bicycle through that same turn. I'm not used to the Panda on hairpins as it's very different in many ways from my NSR50 on the kart tracks. I didn't trust the stock 8" panda tires and I thought there was some dirt across the roadway.

CAplatedXR50, Also see if you can pick up an oil cooler when you mod. I think my bike was running a bit hot going up and down those hills.
