Street legaling my 50??

I'm looking to street legal my 2004 CRF50 within the next few months. I'll have my license in a little less than a year and I want to go ahead and get everything ready. Does anyone know where I can find a cheap lighting kit? With everything I need. I saw the pitster pro one but they are all out of stock. Also, how hard is it to wire these things up? What all parts do I need? Is there anyway to rig something like this up?

Baja designs makes a street legal kit and it will come with EVERYTHING you need. The hard part is just proving it is street legal to the DMV.

actualy you are in florida so things may be different there, but here in cali it is near impossible to get a 50 street legalized.

Re: Street legaling my 50??

I looked at the Baja kit. Buuut its like $450-500 for the kit. Thats a little much but if worse comes to worse then I'll end up getting it...

Yeah. I've seen a few 50s rolling around on the streets so either they are easy to do...or they arent legal. lol

Re: Street legaling my 50??

they make a cyclopse plate for a 50 dont they? maybe not. but you still have to find away to rig up a battery to run the lights.

Re: Street legaling my 50??

The two major parts you need, a street legal (titled and plated) frame and a lighting kit...

I've got BOTH for sale!! BUT... They may be spoken for already. That's the reason they aren't in the classifieds yet...

For a lighting kit... I went Baja Designs with 5 out of the last 6 street legal 50's I built and had ZERO problems with the inspectors at the DMV. Here's a shot of my personal "toy"...

117cc, 4 spd, TITLED Billetware frame, legal as a true motorcycle. the looks on driver' faces as you pass THEM on the highway.... PRICELESS!!!

If you are "forced" to have your bike inspected, the two most important thing these guys look for is SAFETY and OWNERSHIP.

Make the bike as SAFE as humanly possible. Add all the hokey reflectors you can and make them look "stock". Like they were meant to be there. Red in the back, amber on the sides. The reflectors on my forks are actually from a 1982 Yamaha Vision radiator cover, bolted to hangers designed to hold Maglites. LOL!! Easy on, easy off!!!

Next, they look for OWNERSHIP. Do you have receipts for all the major components. Engine, frame, wheels, forks.... How about MSO for the bike from the dealer? Always a good thing to have!! So you bought parts online? No sweat. Just print out the emaied confirmations. Any and all receipts are gold at this point!! Stock bottom end with a trick new huge racehead top end? No problem... 88cc engines and above are, for some reason, easier that the 49cc stockers....

This is where a pile of paprwork comes in handy. When you go to apply for your title, fill out all the applications, stroll up and slam a huge stack of paper along with your apps, including a few pics of the bike, on the counter... Usually, they pick out the ones they need and you're good to go. OR... Wait until the DMV is rather busy and the clerks may just finalize your app right there and approve your title without even looking at the pics!!

Then all you have left to do is walk out with your new plate and tab!! Slap the plate on your bike, go for a cruise, show off a bit to your buddys and wait for your title to arrive in the mail.

I've had some CRF50's titlled and plated in less than one hour. Others have sometimes taken weeks with many bogus inspections.... In the end the rewards are well worth the effort!!

Sure... It's a bit of a game sometime. But where there's a will, there's a way! And if you can't get it done where you are... Send it up to me!!

Re: Street legaling my 50??

cant they just be classified as a moped? in St. louis I ride my mini everywhere. even with dirt tires and no helmet.

The laws are:
-50cc and under
-not allowed on highways
-atleast 16 years of age
-no helmet required

Sure I get messed with every once in a while, but I don't see the point in registering it, seems like a hassle to me. I ride my bike from my house to the trails on the otherside of town.

Re: Street legaling my 50??

My Pitster Motard was way easy here, they didn't even look at it but make sure you remove any info of the bike that might say closed course competition only.

You should call Pitster and see what they have in stock as far as lighting stuff goes or just build your own from ebay. Its pretty easy to get the switches and lights, then you'ld just have to make or find a wiring harness.

Re: Street legaling my 50??

i got my 50 street legal in florida. theirs no inspection in florida so you can rig your own lights, just make sure they work. also if you already have your 50 titled as an ohv or off road only, you cant get it street legal. if you never had it titled or you just have an mso , theirs a good chance you should be able to street legal it.
