KLX110 motard questions.

i have a klx110 that i used to ride mx tracks on. I dont ride it in the dirt anymore and want to start motarding it. I see that some people are switching to 12 inch fronts. How are you doing this? what rim, hub and such? Switch to kx65 front for disk brakes? what tires and sizes? any other info would be great.

Re: KLX110 motard questions.

looks like a lot of people that run the 110's here just use a 12 in rim and new spokes on the drum. or they go to the kx 65 front end, then stiffer springs, build up the motor etc etc

Re: KLX110 motard questions.

If you are planning on racing, I'll offer the following advice.

1.) Find out what your local race organization class restrictions are before you sink a bunch of dough into the bike. If you already have a built motor, you may be out of class limitations.

2.) Don't go with a rear rim mounted to the front hub. Spend the money and get at least 2.15 wide rims front and back. Your tire profile will be much better and you can take advantage of the tire design.

3.) Get a disc set-up for the front end. Rear is optional for road racing as you don't really use it much. But the stock front drum is not gonna get you up front of the pack. The two popular options are KX65 and KTM 65sx. The later is a "zokes" set-up but with better brakes. Stiffen up the suspension and learn what sag is and how to work with it.

4.) Look for used leathers. Often the local race org will have people who have extra sets. Craigslist is also good. Get a good helmet with a flip visor. You don't want foggy goggles in the middle of a sprint race.

5.) Get a copy of Kieth Codes "A Twist of the Wrist" read it and incorporate what applies to Supermoto. That will be your best money and time spent.

6.) If your motor is stock, you will fit in more classes. Spend your money on suspension and wheels/brakes before you buy HP. Then, after racing a while, you will be able to decide if you want to build for a faster class and what mods are best to get you there. You can always race a smaller lower HP in classes with bigger bikes, but not the other way around. So a well dialed in small displacement bike will get you in more races and give you a better chance of winning than a high HP bike that has poor suspenders and brakes etc...
