Talking Honda Ape 200cc Build

I'm already working on this for a while, but I thought if I put it on here, you guys would make sure I keep some speed at working on it.

It started when I found a 200cc liquid cooled lifan engine, the shop told me the engine would drop right into the Ape frame. So after 3 months the engine finally arrived here in Thailand (from Germany), thanks to my boss for putting it in a container for me. Then it took me a while to find an Ape. In the picture you see the bike as I bought it, 50cc.

Of course the engine did not fit , so I had to bend the front frame tube a bit forward and cut off the lower rear mounts. After making new plates to connect the engine to the front frame mounts, I checked if the sprockets still lined up. Big wonder, but they actually did!

Now I am making new mounts for the rear, but I am afraid I didn't bend the front tube far enough, so it looks like I won't be able to get the engine out once I weld the mounts on...............we'll see.
I am going to use my left-over parts from my KSR. So the swing arm will be a KSR swing arm that I extend about 4". I only had to take off 2mm on each side of the bushings to make the swing arm fit !

On the internet I found pictures on a Japanese website of an Ape with KSR front fork in it. So I thought if a Japanese shop can do it, a Dutch mastermind as me can do it too! I had to change the shaft in the triple tree, because the Ape uses smaller bearings than the KSR, so I turned a new shaft out of aluminum that is also lighter than the steel stocker and voila, it fits!

The wheels I have left of my KSR will also go on, plus the standar brakes, so it will fit easy. Below some pics.
I will update if I make some progress, good ideas are always welcome.
Also, anybody interested in the rear swing arm complete with wheels, brake etc + front fork with wheel brake etc from an Ape?

Re: Honda Ape 200cc Build

Stock wheels are 12" same size as the KSR's, the engine I bought from www.monkey-tuning.com, with a nice discount, I guess nobody bought them. I wanted a air-cooled engine actually, but they didn't have them nomore, I saw tboltusa does have them air-cooled.

What's a fair price for original Honda parts in good condition? Tonight I'll put up some pics.

What pocketbike frame will it fit? Then maybe when I finish this one I can do an easy project.

No, I'm putting in a KSR usd fork and KSR swing arm. That way I can also use the KSR wheels and disc brakes. I want to sell them to keep my car park clean (or almost clean). Below some pics of them. Front fork has a Kitaco top plate.

Looks like the rear motor mount has to be bolt-on, otherwise the engine is stuck in the frame. Also made an aluminum washer and anodized it to get about 5mm clearance between cilinder head and the tank. Hopefully that will be enough.

That's cool! How big is that bike, are that 10" wheels?
Here in Thailand we don't have a lot of choise in pocketbikes, but maybe I can stuff it in my suitcase!

Re: Honda Ape 200cc Build

Making a new brace for my swing arm. I made a lot of cuts with the grinder, so it is easy to bend. Now off to the welder to weld it.
The bushings of the KSR swing arm I had to cut down 2mm on each side to make it fit, actually not too bad, I expected more work.
The wheels I got back from the chromer and put back together. Now I need some tires for them.

Re: Honda Ape 200cc Build

It has been some time since the last post, but it took me some time to get the brace for the swingarm right. After spending some time on the first brace, I found out it was a bit too small and couldn't be reworked: the chain would rub the brace. So I made a new one, a bit wider and had it welded on.
Also finished my alu 4" extension pieces. These I will glue in and bolt on. That should be strong enough. Made a small stopper for the rear brake and pressed it in.
Tomorrow I'll sand it a bit and try to sand blast it, then it's ready for some paint.
Need to get some tires to get the bike on its wheels and finish all the details.

Re: Honda Ape 200cc Build

nice bike, the only thing troubling me is the fact that your using an aluminum steering stem, will that be strong enough?

Great! People are still looking. I thought nobody checked anymore, so I didn't update (also slacked a lot in the building). I'll post some pics tonight. It's on its wheels, now need to finish the details.
