Re: photography lighting question?

Studio Flash Systems - Digital Flash Systems - Elinchrom Flash Systems if you're going all out - flash units start at $850ea (I use the professional RX style compacts at the studio and for big location shoots)

White Lightning: Professional Photographic Flash Units and Accessories : Home Page if you're on a budget - flash units start at $400ea (I use these for most of my location shoots)

AlienBees: Illuminating the Galaxy with Professional Photographic Lighting Equipment If you're on even more of a budget - flash units start at $250ea (I haven't used these but they are they are a cheaper line of flashes produced by the same people that make white lightnings)

You're probably gonna want a minimum of 3 lights... 4 or more is better (main light, fill light, background light, hair light).
I like chimera softboxes (not a big fan of umbrellas for some reason)... There are so many types of light modifiers it's unbelievable (umbrellas, softboxes, gels, snoots, grids, spots, reflectors, scrims, I could go on and on)... Decide on a brand of flash then look at modifiers because you need to buy those to fit your flashes...

If you want a hobby that can be more expensive than riding minis... you found it... have fun ; )

I can be more specific if you have more specific questions... and you thought choosing a camera was hard... : )

Re: photography lighting question?

My buddy that is a profession photographer is using those little halogen work lights. He bought some wireless transmitter that one end hooks to the flash shoe on the camera and the reciever plugs into a wall outlet and you just plug the light into that. When he takes pics the camera trips the reciever and the halogen lights go off like a flash.

Flash units are designed for consistency over time (not a halogen work light's intended use)... I can come up with a bunch of other reasons why that set up isn't ideal but hey... whatever works...
I know of professional photographers that use all kinds of funky tricks and tools...

Thats why I never did anything studio wise... As soon as you think you have your camera dialed, you have 198475098217345 other lighting factors to worry about.

I use the sun for my stuff! Or one on-camera flash.

Re: photography lighting question?

There is one possibility... A little over $2000...
I didn't include a fourth light for a hair light because your ceiling isn't tall enough.
Also, I did include a background stand and a couple rolls of background paper (black and white). In fact, that stand is the one I use and it can hold 3 different rolls on it at once... if you have enough space side to side I think it can hold 6 different rolls at once (not 100% sure about 6 rolls because I use wider rolls)... I know you said you didn't need backgrounds but these are pretty cheap and they are what seniors choose most at our studio...
I think that would be a good starter set-up for a studio... Plus this set-up can all be packed up and taken with you anywhere pretty easily... And you can always add more pieces (lights, modifiers, backgrounds, etc.) as you go...
Hope that helps... let me know if you have questions...

Re: photography lighting question?

Im a lighting director for television and film in hollywood with almost 20 yrs experience and have over 400 lights and other equipment. If you lived on the west coast in socal I could set you up no problem .Feel free to shoot me a PM with any questions about lights and other equipment, or just general setup info... there is a ton of crap for sale out there so dont impulse buy when it comes to lights, quality of build, quality of the field of light that the light produces all affect the final product or photos a great deal ... good luck and have fun

7ft high is going to be a real limiting factor on what you can do... If I was standing my head would only be 8 inches from the ceiling... This is going to make it hard to get your lights up where they need to be for standing poses...

Think everything through... don't rush the purchase... you should figure out what style of lighting you like and buy the tools to accomplish that style... For example different light modifiers produce different looks and different quality of light... For all I know you don't like the soft even light that a softbox produces... You have a ton of options so take your time and enjoy finding your style...

Also... the background papers that I recommended (53" wide) don't work well for more than one person... it's hard to even fit one person on it for a standing full length pose...

But... that size is cheap and you can get a big variety of colors that don't take up much space and don't brake the bank... If you can store and afford wider papers get those... If you find good, cheap backgrounds that seniors would like as much as solid papers, let me know and I'll get some too...

(My recommendations have been based on the idea that you want a "Mini Studio to Photograph High School Seniors")...
