Question Knee injury questions

I have a few questions for all of you guys that have had knee injury's in the past.

I was making a right turn yesterday when my bike jumped out of a rut and my foot planted in the rut I was previously in. I felt a crack/crunch in my right knee and it hinged to the right in a way the knee is not designed to do. Instant pain but not much swelling. It feels like it wants to pop out of the socket if I put a lot of pressure on it. I woke up this morning and it is swelled up a little and the mobility is decreased and feels no better.
I know this has to be a somewhat common injury with Motocross. I was not wearing any knee brace.

My question is what's the damage and how do I make it better? I hope not surgery but I think it might be.

Re: Knee injury questions

A few easy days and some anti-inflamatorys might get things back in order, but you (ok, we...) old guys aren't as elastic as the kids. I had a donor ACL installed a few years ago and it's working fine now. Aggressive PT before and after surgery are the key to a good recovery, if you gewt the knife. Range of motion and stretching help tons too.

Re: Knee injury questions

It sure sucks getting old! From what I have been reading on the net and the manner I got hurt it sounds like ACL tear. I really can't afford to be getting hurt like this anymore. After last years BIG accident I thought I learned my lesson, but I guess I'm a slow learner.

Re: Knee injury questions

How big are your legs? Wow, that looks wierd...

I have a trick Breg ACL brace and an immobilizer you can have cheap, if you're (well) above average size.

Re: Knee injury questions

There is really no way that any of us can give you a diagnosis. I know that is not what you want to hear, but your best bet is go see an orthopedic. I have had my fair share of injuries (I am currently rehabbing a broken pelvis) and without a proper medical diagnosis you can do more damage by trying to avoid a DR. Knee injuries are a side effect of MX riding, and it is not a matter of IF you ever get one but WHEN.

To answer your question, if you bent your knee to the side, then your possible injuries are MCL, ACL, or Meniscus damage. Crunching or popping sounds and feelings in the knee are sure signs of soft tissue damage on some level.

GET IT CHECKED!!!!

Re: Knee injury questions

Getting it checked out tomorrow, just trying to get a feel for what others have damaged in similar situations.

Last years big accident (BMX) almost killed me and I swore off all dangerous activities until I healed and the desire out weighed the fear.

Firepower I appreciate the offer but I would consider myself average size (5'8"-185lbs). Thanks

Re: Knee injury questions

sounds like an ACL/MCL to me and if its locking up on you, you prolly tore your miniscus... i'm going in for surgery on sept. 4th to get a fuggin ACL replacement using a cadaver. definately go get an MRI. the down time sucks if its completely torn like mine; 3 months no work after surgery and a full year for "full" recovery....

You gotta be kidding me, 3 months! My wife will kill me if I'm out of work that long. It does not lock up but does not feel real secure in it's socket. Not much swelling though so maybe just a small tear....I hope!

You have got to be kidding me!!!! One year for full recovery! Man I would get a better PT, I was back on a bicycle racing DH 5 months post op from my ACL and that was with a quadraceps graph. Eat whole foods, no booze, no soda, lots of water and go to a good Sports Medicine group, and get aggressive with your therapy and you can come back stronger than you were before!!

Re: Knee injury questions

3 months no work and up to 1 yr full blown recovey time. this is the second orthopedic surgeon i've seen and he's saying the same deal. they want it completely immobilized for the entire 1st week and on crutches for 6 weeks. reason being for no work 3 months is that i'm a mechanic and heavy lifting is a big no no cuz they're worrried about the anchor on the cadaver pulling out of my bone. maybe sooner for other occupations. i'm pretty badass with the eating right and no boozin' and i heal up pretty quick so i'm hopin for a sooner recovery.... but i had another buddy, a pro snoboarder, with almost the same situation and it took him 6 months to get back on a board and feel semi-comfortable with it. either way, **** it.... could be just 1 month, i know i'm gonna go nuts without riding...

Damn knee.

" Knee injuries are a side effect of MX riding, and it is not a matter of IF you ever get one but WHEN." Very true, probably why I might be done with the dirt!

6 inches and 100lbs on you, likely wouldn't be a good fit

Shredded my ACL in a snowmobile accident. First T-Cat in the area, 57 miles in to it's life, I hit a rut where the groomer had U-turned and went in to the gigglesticks, at around 80... Nailed an Oak hard enough to stuff the motor in to the track and shatter the cases. All three pipes smashed flat, tunnel twisted. I got off the side but caught the end of the left bar hard enough to put it over the hood and tear my muscle wall in the center of my stomach. That sent me upside down in to the woods. I hyperextended my knee on a 8" tree about 30' from the impact site. That launched me 15' up in to a BIG tree where I hit the side of my head and scrapped a new Shoei. Woke up with the crew looking at me like they were looking at a corpse. Now we laugh about them hearing "Aw, Fuzk" on the intercoms, then static. Good times. We stop to piss on that tree the first ride every year.

I was in good enough shape to get by for 10 years without the ACL, but as I got lazier and stopped aggressive training, the surrounding muscle wouldn't hold it together any more. Started to slip out now and again. Final straw was picking up an 80lb bag of fertilizer at the farm, twisting instead of squaring up. It came apart with a nauseating pop. Called the Dr and set it up. Some dead bastard donated his. Works swell now.

I feel the same way but I have put my family through hell this past year and I just can't afford to be out of work again. 2 kids, a mortgage, and a stay at home mom don't pay for themselves. I don't mind getting hurt and I know it's part of the sport and that's what scares me. Might look into Motard or Karts as they just built this killer race track Welcome to New Jersey Motorsports Park just 20 miles from my house. I used to run Karts but got out of it cause there was not enough places to run and it was expensive, but add in the cost of missing 3 months of work each year due to injury's and it all evens out.

Yup i was going to say the same thing. I had my ACL replaced a little over a year ago. Surgery sucked, meds were great!

rehabing the knee wasnt that bad. Good thing my job lets me work from home as it was a few weeks before i was really getting around again.

Try working on perks its a lot of fun

Re: Knee injury questions

Been there done that. Last year I took a big spill on my new 1st ride 24" FMF cruiser BMX bike. I wound up breaking every bone in my face. I mean every bone! I split my jaw in 3 pieces, had a 1/4" split in my frontal skull, destroyed my right orbital socket, my treahca collapsed, I had a bleed on my brain the size of a lemon, and so on. 5 surgery's and 9 titanium plates later I'm as good as new, and yes plenty of pain meds. The good stuff to like liquid oxycotin, 5 minute morphine drip, dylautin cause I was hallucinating from the morphine.
Not looking forward to any of that again anytime soon.
