Agreed. Comfortable. Don't be too cheap, don't be too extravagent. Just have some nice engagement photos done and she'll have something nice to look back at when things are not going so well...

Probably one of the cheapest things I had done that mine enjoyed the most was I had given a stranger a disposable camera to photograph the moment and she got pictures of it happening without knowing it was coming.

Where the in the name of god are you doing business, because you are getting flat ripped off for 1 carat diamonds.

GIA cert as well.
in nyc in the diamond district and downtown china town 14 years ago a 1 carat gem was selling in that 15-20k range. could it have been the stock brokers around the corner who were making 150k a month that allowed them to rape people? i dont know, i only know thats the prices i was quoted everywhere.

I have no idea what diamond prices were 14 years ago because I was 14 and could care less. Today, they are not anywhere close to that from any decent GIA certified diamond broker.

Congrats man, everyone should do it once in their life. No one deserves to be happy for ever.

Re: Engagement Ring

like Mark says, it's about giving up something for her. SHowing her that you are willing to make that commitment. Rings don't have to be expensive AT ALL then again, depending on the girl, I feel sorry for you guys who have bimbos and trophy girlfriends with no brains, in the same respect I feel sorry for you guys who have intelligent successful women in there lives who require the same fancy diamond if you want to be blessed with their amazing-ness your whole life.

It's tradition. And a good tradition. I wouldn't ever marry a guy unless he made that sacrifice, because I'v made my own, way more expensive then a damned ring. It just shows your committed. End of story.

I think I speak for a TON og girls when I say, it's really honestly not about the ring, or how expensive it is, it's about the principal. I think I'd rather have a brand new 150R fully modded with custom graphics, with a $200 engagement ring sitting on it.

Re: Engagement Ring

Huge waste of money. I did'nt get my wife a wedding band till 3 months after we were married (almost 20 years now). On our 10th anniversary I bought her a 'speck' of a diamond ring. She had the nerve to ask my if it was real. Itold if it were fake she would be able to see the rock. We both would rather put money in the belly and the house. Girls like to show off a ring but time together proves commitment better than anything else. "Presidence is very hard to break once it has been established." I'ts better to be realistic (cheap?) in the beginning then anything you do better later on means more. IMO

Re: Engagement Ring

My wife and I had the wedding we wanted...we invited only our immediate family and had the ceremony at an old VA post built in the 17th century. We had worked with a local chef at a fine dining restaurant to makeup a menu of exactly what we wanted.

Rings...I layed out a large sum for a 1 carat near flawless set in platinum. For me, I got a tungstun carbide made exactly in the shape of a 6v 3-speed transmission spacer. (just in case)

After about a week, she said she would buy me the Triumph Bonneville I had been drooling over for a year and I turned the offer down. It was important to me to give without expecting a return. My return is that she never says a word about my bikes unless I complain about them or say I don't have space. And...does not monitor my spending on them.

My advice to you and anyone getting married is this:
1. Be SURE you've had enough of the swinging lifestyle to suit (unless she's into it, she's the last you should have)
2. Don't marry the first girl you lay
3. Have the wedding YOU and HER want, not the wedding your parents want.
4. Don't let your parents pay for it even if they offer. They'll hold it over you. Instead have them take that money and invest it for you to buy a house or a piece of property.

I've been to 200k weddings, 10k weddings and everything in between. The best wedding was a 15k affair that kept it simple and real like the folks who got married.

Re: Engagement Ring

Her parents have a house on the water with a dock. I picked her up in my boat all dressed up and did it on the dock while her dad took candid pictures with a zoom lens. I had asked her dad permission weeks earlier. Then we had some champagne with her folks. then we cruised off into the sunset in the boat and headed for the city. I had reserved a dock/slip for the boat in town and a room at a nice hotel on the water. we walked over to the north end for a nice dinner. then back out on the boat with more champagne, grapes and cheese and crackers up the charles river. I shelled out the cake for the ring even though i don't really agree with the concept. But the ring is what I thought she wanted (and i was right, she loves it). So it really doesn't matter what i think. As for the wedding its up to her, i don't care as long as it is within reason. But then she said to me instead of a honey moon, lets buy that big boat we want and head out on a long trip in it for the honeymoon. Thats the kind of girl she is, which is why I am so lucky.
