Chevy s-10 vs. 1500? Ok guys im looking to buy one of these two trucks in the next couple of months and was wondering what your opinions are? I know that you can get the 4.3L V6 in either, and they are rated at the exact same fuel economy with the V6 in each. Check out fueleconomy.gov. im looking for a 1999-2003 if that helps. . .

Re: Chevy s-10 vs. 1500? 1500 is just bigger, the dash is all the same if they are the same years, you just gotta decide if you want a big truck or small truck since gas mileage is the same, I say 1500.

Re: Chevy s-10 vs. 1500? the only mods im considering are exhaust, headers and intake. im not dropping a big gas guzzler into it sorry id rather just buy a 5.3L V8. i really dont see any reason to want a smaller truck then a bigger one? and when comparing, yes please do compare them as being the same year.

Re: Chevy s-10 vs. 1500? I had a 1999 s-10 zr2 and got about 14-16 MPG. And I just had a 2003 silverado 1500 z71 with the 5.3 I was getting 16-20 MPG. Both were extra cabs and four wheel drive. the 4.3 v6 is a out of date P.O.S. The 1500 is a lot more truck for the money.

Re: Chevy s-10 vs. 1500? It would depend on the cost and quality of both trucks...and how comfortable you are in them.

Re: Chevy s-10 vs. 1500? Don't believe **** you read on fueleconomy.org, they are all EPA rated estimates. The real world gas mileage will usually be significantly less and you can believe the 1500 doesn't get near the gas mileage of the s-10.

Re: Chevy s-10 vs. 1500? The 4.8 is a good motor. Not as much power as the 5.3 so it has to work harder to move the same amount of truck. But sence it is 2wd (less rotating mass) it should almost equal out to the 5.3. With no load you could get up to 22 on the freeway. If you are going to pull a trailer alot I would hold out for the 5.3 Oh yeah 102k miles now days is not that much. My 03 had 106K and its in great working order

Re: Chevy s-10 vs. 1500? Yes. I've got a 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 with the Vortec POS 350 in it, and I regularly get 15mpg city, 19 interstate. It's also got 172K miles. If you drive like a teenage girl, then you will be lucky to get 13 mpg with ANY engine. The V6 is an OLD engine. Yes, it's a "good" engine, but it's an old ass design. The V6 will give you basically the same fuel economy, but you will be pissed because your truck is so damn slow. If you want to have something that a female (GASP) won't mind riding in because she doesn't have to worry about getting run over every time your anemic ass truck tries to merge onto the interstate, please for the love of god get a V8. Yes, you will get 2-5 mpg less depending on your driving habits. If you EVER need to tow anything, you will be thanking the V8 Car Gods because of the extra power. So the lesson learned is this - smaller engines may give you better gas mileage, but you will be miserable when you find out the 0-60 time is 15 minutes. Buy whatever you think you can afford, but make sure you test drive the **** out of them before you buy it. Good luck - DAVE

Re: Chevy s-10 vs. 1500? Here are my two cents; I have a 2000 S-10 2wd reg cab, long bed, 4.3 V6 auto. Its a great truck, pretty quick too. I haul my 17 foot boat all over the place with ease. I also haul 2 Harleys (sportsters) in the bed with no problem. My previous truck was a 97 1500 Silverado 4x4 with the 350. I get much better fuel economy in the S-10. The S-10also handles like a sports car compared to the 1500. Here are before and after pics. I work in the city and park in a garage. the Silverado was a pain in the but to drive in the garage at work. ![]() ![]()
