AMA Pitbike class?

Found this on another site which was taken off the AMA site. Anyone know about the pitbike part?

Nationally recognized amateur motocross classes for 2008 will include:

MX Lites (100cc-153cc 2-stroke/151cc-250cc 4-stroke);
125 Class (86cc-125cc 2-stroke only)
Motocross (154cc-285cc 2-stroke/251cc-450cc 4-stroke);
250 Class (126cc-250cc 2-stroke only);
Open (251cc-500cc 2-stroke/390cc-650cc 4-stroke).
Displacements may be OEM or achieved by aftermarket modification.

The amateur motocross class structure for 2008 also includes Plus 25, Veteran 30 and Veteran 40 for riders at least 25, 30 or 40 years old, respectively, riding two- or four-stroke motorcycles with displacements of 86cc-open; and a Women's class for women riding two- or four-stroke motorcycles with displacements of 80cc-open.

The AMA amateur motocross classes for 2008 will also recognize a Pit Bike class. The specifications for the Pit Bike class are still being finalized and will be submitted for AMA Congress approval at the October meeting.

Re: AMA Pitbike class?

As discussed in another thread on the topic, no details have been released beyond that tidbit.

Re: AMA Pitbike class?

AMA is still not releasing any details or rules, spoke to Brain at AMA and he does not know when they will be releasing any rules on pit bikes, he is in amateur dept at AMA. So it look like the only published set of rules are Pit Bike Racing Association at this time, they revised and there rules is now allot better and it is free for membership.

Re: AMA Pitbike class?

The PBRAs rules still have some issues...

Pitbikes are defined as 54" or smaller wheelbase, 14" or smaller rear wheel? Then in the tech requirements they clamp 10" rear wheel machines to a 45" wheelbase, 12" to a 49" wheelbase, and say 12" rear wheel is the max. No classes allow 14" wheels. Looking closer, I also see they fail to mention anything about liquid cooling or running a two stroke... Pardon whilst I prep my 188cc water cooled two stroke in a closed cradle frame, 12" rear wheel monster. :P

Foot peg pivot points can't be more than 3 inches from the frame... Thats a rule that can be interpreted many ways, and I can think of lots of scenarios where even the kindest reading rules out many safe machines.

No titanium frames? Thats an odd exclusion.

"Forks must be adequate in strength and size for the pit bike and it's use." Guess that rules out all stock 50 style front ends. :P

"No radio communication with riders is permitted." Every rule has a name to thank for it, I want to hear the story behind this rule and how it crept into pitbike racing.

It's a nice try, but still way out there compared to the ideas and rules in use in 99% of the pitbike races actually occurring. I think the standard laid down by the Master of Minis series is closer to ideal than the PBRA setup.

Re: AMA Pitbike class?

I doubt there will be a reconized class. Most districts already have there format and schedules out for the year. The AMA messed up the class structure enough now I don't even know if I would like to see the rules if they come up with a pitbike class.

Re: AMA Pitbike class?

Kurlon, maybe if we help the PBRA out with advise, they can get there rules the way they should be, to have a good set of rules, at least they took the initiative to come up with them and try and get something of the ground to help the sport, I will be working close with them in the future and will help them get it straighten out. But input from everyone will help and the good can be separated from the bad and we can be left with something positive that will work and help grow our sport.
