compare the 03 R6 and the 08 XB12R. The R6 is lighter, by about 40 lbs, has right at the same HP and a much better power/weight ratio. Not to mention that it is a much better looking bike. About the only thing Buell is better on is fuel economy. Don't even think about comparing a Buell to the R1.
I've actually ridden both of those bikes. I would say go for the newer bike simply because you don't want something that could end up causing you too many problems in the near future. You can always grow into the R1; thats what I had to do. Do you need a liter bike? Probably not...but overall its going to be a better bike.
