I have had them both, I was in the same situation that you are in. Bout the same age at the time. I have been ridden dirt bikes for ever. I worked at a yamha dealer. So I had pretty ridden just about everything out there. I still chose to start on a 600. I rode it for three months then bought a r1. If you can afford to do so, start on a used 600 at least for a few months. Just to learn the ways of the road. Its a whole new ball game. I am glad I went that route. I learned alot on the 600. And it made me a better ridder on the 1000. Alot like ridden the lites before the big 450's.
