wd40 is a penetrant, not a lubricant.

Ahem....
Straight from google.

Lubricant
Any substance interposed between two surfaces in relative motion for the purpose of reducing the friction and/or the wear between them.

Penetrant:
A finely divided powder applied over the surface of a part to help bring out penetrant indications.

Now I am not saying you are wrong, but I just don't understand how it is not a lubricant.

I know it is not a top notch lubricant, but it is a lubricant none the less.

Re: uses for WD40

It is a degreaser. Thats why you don't use it on your chain, it does not lube it.

Re: uses for WD40

I have also used it as a fish attractant. Sprayed on plastic worms and such. Flishing many predatory fish like bass and waleye......and I have guys swear by it as a arthritis inflamation reliever. Just spray on the areas and rub it in like a lubricant that works as a penetrant.............lol
Its great for alot of things. Always keep in around that is unless I have kroil oil or the starret oil penetrants.

Re: uses for WD40

WD40 can be used as a lubricant, but it is one of the worst ones on the market. Don't use it on anything that rotates with any sort of speed or you are pretty much wasting your time (i.e. anything other than door hinges). WD40 also isn't a very good penetrant. It's real developed use was as a water displacer, hence the "WD". It's name stands for "water displacement 40th try" as it was the 40th attempt at formulating such a concoction and it succeeded in displacing water.

Re: uses for WD40

I use it to clean my ZX14's wheels, takes the brake dust off and looks nice afterwards. I also clean chains then relube them with chain lube. Keeps them nice also. So I guess I just clean with it.
