Mark, are you getting some big gains on the new TB race head? Just got one and I see a bunch of valve seat shoved in to the short side of the intake port, causing a huge ridge. Looks pretty bad, or do they flow ok anyway?

They don't flow too bad considering how they look but need a lot of work. The whole port needs shifted over, raised, and reshaped without making it much bigger. The biggest issues I have with the new tb heads is having the seats move because of those huge lips. It doesn't leave enough material to hold the seat and if you clean it all out of there then the seat starts to warp and eventually shifts in the head if you get it hot enough and open the seat up much. Oversize seats are a must in my mind if you really plan on opening it up.

Thanks, J. Pretty much how I saw it. Looks like it gets a bowl blend and sent away. I'll butcher a $15 E22 instead

haha, good call. The tb heads need the ports filled in but once that is done you can definitely make them work. It's too "risky" otherwise for me to put my name on something without going the full workup with oversize seats. Of course, I've got three free ones here with bad overlap that I'm supposed to fix and test on until pieces fly.

Yea there is that, and the ugliness on the exhaust port where it meets the guide, which I am sure you have seen. Some can be cleaned up on that exhaust, and some marine-tex to help

I just did an E22 today I was pretty proud of, since its the first ones we started doing years ago, its always good to go back to that sometimes, those things can be made to work good... I know that was random.

No I would not say that, there is a whole lot of work that can be done to any head and it usually will just keep making it better. Some or if not most of the things Cyclerider touched on would be advanced head modifications, again, which could be done to other heads as well, making them better as well.

Basically what I am trying to say is that its all relevant being that the more you put into the head, modification wise, most likely the more you can get out of them... any head that is, the new TB head was just being made an example of because it is new and popular.

With the V2 priced where it is, are the YX150 stock heads worth porting?

The YX head is very comparable to the old TB race head in port/valve size, but the latest batch of YX's have a more aggressive cam grind than even the TB race cam which is nice straight off the boat.

Its like when people were all the rage over the Lifan BVH (bigger is better right) but a nicely ported Jialing (large intake port casting) could run with an off the shelf Lifan with the same rider in my opinion.

Re: Porting and Polishing work - $95 until Christmas!

Its important to remember the roller rocker design allows for a much wilder ramp up on the cam, where as a head like the Lifan BVH upgrade would never be able to achieve since it uses normal rockers... big difference.
